Compare two Postman environments
Compare our Staging and Production environments in Postman.
Staging and Production differ on 6 variables. - Missing in Production: webhook_url - Same in both: client_id, which should normally differ - Case mismatch: baseUrl and baseURL, likely a typo - Empty in Staging: api_token Want the full comparison?

The problem

One variable breaks Production and nobody can see which

A request that works in Staging and fails in Production is often down to one environment variable: missing, disabled, empty, or a base URL copied across unchanged. Spotting it means reading two long variable lists side by side.

Without PopdockAI

  • Open both environments side by side
  • Read every key and value by eye
  • Miss a key that differs only by case
  • Expose secret values while comparing

With PopdockAI

  • Both environments are resolved by name
  • Every key is compared for missing, disabled and empty values
  • Suspiciously identical hosts and tokens are flagged
  • Secret values are never shown, and nothing is changed

Prompt
**Objective:** Compare the Postman environment `{source-environment}` with `{target-environment}` (for example Staging against Production) and list every variable that would make a request behave differently between them.

**Step 1: Resolve both environments**

Call `postman-get-environments` with `name` = `{source-environment}`, then with `name` = `{target-environment}`. If an exact match returns nothing, retry with `name.contains`. If either resolves to more than one environment, list the matches (name, owner, updated-at) and stop.

**Step 2: Load the variables**

Call `postman-get-environment-variables` with `environment-id` for each environment. Keep key, value and enabled.

**Step 3: Compare by key**

* Only in source / only in target: the key exists on one side only. These break requests when switching environments.
* Enabled on one side, disabled on the other.
* Empty on one side, set on the other.
* Values that are identical in both, for keys that normally should differ between environments (base URLs, hosts, tokens, client ids). Flag these as a possible copy-paste mistake.

**Step 4: Report**

A table with columns key, source state, target state, problem. Show values only for non-secret keys (not containing token, secret, password, key, auth or credential) and truncate them to 40 characters. Put missing keys first. End with a one-line verdict: aligned, or N differences that need attention.

**Rules & Guidelines:**

* Key comparison is case-sensitive, as Postman's is. Mention keys that differ only by case as a likely typo.
* This is read-only. Do NOT call `postman-update-environment`, `postman-add-environment` or any other write tool.

**Validation:**

* If both names resolve to the same environment, say so and stop.
* If either environment has no variables, report that and list the other side's keys as missing.

Who it's for

One answer, three teams that use it

Backend developers

Find why it fails in one environment

See the exact variables that differ, so you can fix a failing request quickly.

Compare the Dev and Staging environments in Postman and show what differs.

QA engineers

Check a new environment is complete

Keys missing on one side are listed, so a new environment is not missing anything a test needs.

Is the UAT environment in Postman missing any variables that Production has?

DevOps engineers

Catch copied production values

Hosts and tokens that are identical where they should differ are flagged before they cause trouble.

Do our Staging and Production Postman environments share any hosts or tokens?

How it works

What PopdockAI does when you ask

You name two Postman environments and your AI assistant compares every variable. Secret-like values stay hidden and other values are cut short.

01

Ask

You name two environments, such as Staging and Production.

Your AI tool

02

Read

It resolves both by name and loads their variables.

03

Compare

It checks every key, including keys that differ only by case.

No items found.

04

Report

You get the differences with secret values hidden, and nothing changed.
